Chapel Down, the highly successful English wine producer, has just released a 23-Year-Old Grape Brandy made from grapes grown in Kent. The spirit was distilled in 1992 and then aged in French oak. According to one spirits writer it has “all the hallmarks of a complex armagnac or calvados but with its own personality”. By definition brandy is a spirit made from a fruit. Just like Chapel Down, armagnac and cognac are brandies made from grapes but they each have to be made under very strict conditions. Most importantly the grapes must be grown in one of the designated cru regions before being distilled according to their respective regulations. Brandy made in the UK is therefore a rarity. All the cognacs, armagnacs and calvados that we supply are produced and aged entirely in France, with one notable exception – ‘Early Landed’. Some smaller houses ship their barrels of young ‘eau de vie’ to the UK to be aged in cellars here. British cellars are colder and drier than French ones so the barrels absorb more of the spirit but the system saves money and sees some fine products such as Hine and Delamain cognacs being bottled in the UK. Not sure that the Chapel Down Grape Brandy will be able to compete with these fine nectars but hopefully the British will support this initiative rather than see it shipped to China along with most other grape brandies.

The Bottle Story – Delord XO Premium Armagnac
The latest release from the house of Delord is a Delord XO Premium Armagnac. Blended from Bas Armagnac eau de vie that has been aged for between 25 and 45 years, our experience as a Delord supplier tells us that it will be rich in flavour and high in quality. Its appearance, however, is a departure from the norm. Presented in a more modern style of bottle with a metallic label replacing the distinctive hand written one, this is a very different image for Delord. We have just taken delivery of some more Delord vintages in their traditional green basquaise bottles, in wooden presentation boxes. Selling fast, this original presentation is as popular as ever!
Cognac Gift Presentation and New Armagnac Vintages
Lots of new stock has arrived on our shelves during the last month. An exciting new concept for the cognac connoisseur is a Cognac Gift Presentation offering 2 x 20cl bottles of very special old cognacs. Enough to try, enjoy and share with a friend and the perfect way to sample some of the very best the Charente has to offer.
We also have a brand new Hermitage Cognac 1976 distilled 40 years ago. This vintage is proving to be exceptionally rare so we don’t expect our stock to be on the shelves for long!
In addition, we have taken delivery of some new armagnac vintages including the very popular 1986, 1976 and 1966 from 30, 40 and 50 years ago respectively.
The Bottle Story – Gautier
Cognac Gautier has just released its XO Gold & Blue and Tradition Rare expressions. Once upon a time Gautier was held in very high regard as a cognac producer but now it is owned by Jemaco, who specialise in Pastis, and is not so well known. The XO Gold & Blue was recently voted the World’s Best Cognac, quite an accolade indeed, but don’t forget like most others XOs, it can surely only claim to be the best Blended Cognac? It should be compared against one of the few XOs we stock – Fontpinot – a rare, single domaine XO cognac.
Hermitage 1966 Grande Champagne Cognac
The New Year is traditionally the time to consider all things new – like the latest vintage from Hermitage Cognacs. It is 50 years since the Hermitage 1966 Grande Champagne Cognac was distilled. Aged to perfection in oak barrels, only a few bottles of this precious treasure remain. Rare, complex and with incredible balance, this cognac makes a fantastic gift for a 50 year old birthday or anniversary, or to commemorate something special that happened in 1966… like England winning the World Cup!

Hermitage 1900 Salles d’Angles Grande Champagne Cognac
We have often had more than one 1900 vintage in the Hermitage range and this one originating from the region of Salles d’Angles, on the western side of the Grande Champagne, is the latest arrival. Its wonderful aroma of vine leaves and jasmine with green walnuts, cedar, mangosteen and dry spice combines with initial flavours of toast, liquorice and truffle developing into pear, kumquat and grapefruit peel all mixed in with cloves, mushrooms and ginger. Wonderfully complex cognacs this good are rare. Read about the rest of our Hermitage range here.
Another New Vintage Cognac in Stock
Yet another wonderful addition to the Hermitage range, we have just taken receipt of our new 1965 vintage. Distilled 50 years ago it is perfect for special birthdays, anniversaries or to just enjoy as a special old vintage. The Hermitage 1965 comes from Réaux, one of the top growing areas of Petite Champagne and has a rich, intense flavour of bitter chocolate, cardamom and roasted almonds. Although most of the Hermitage collection come from Grande Champagne, this magical, soft cognac from Petite Champagne joins the select few that we offer from this fine region. Try it for yourself:
